IATA Forecast: Global Air Transport Set for Growth in 2026

Created on 26.03.2026 09:40

The latest “Global Outlook for Air Transport” report released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) outlines a robust recovery and continued expansion of the global airline industry in 2026, reinforcing the sector’s resilience amid ongoing economic and operational challenges.

According to IATA, total passenger numbers are expected to reach approximately 5.2 billion in 2026, marking an increase of about 4.4 % compared with 2025 and setting a new global record for air travel demand. Load factors (the percentage of seats filled) are also projected to reach an unprecedented 83.8 %, reflecting persistent demand pressure and a shortage of available aircraft capacity.

Financial indicators within the outlook also point to a strengthening industry position. The global airline sector is forecast to post a combined net profit of around USD 41 billion in 2026, up from an estimated USD 39.5 billion in 2025, with a net profit margin of approximately 3.9 %. While profitability remains modest compared to pre-pandemic performance, this level of profitability underscores the industry’s ability to adapt to cost pressures such as supply chain bottlenecks, rising operational expenses, and geopolitical uncertainties. Total industry revenues are expected to exceed USD 1.05 trillion, an increase from previous year estimates and highlighting the sector’s contribution to the broader global economy.

On the cargo side, demand is projected to continue expanding in 2026, albeit at a slower pace than the rapid growth seen in 2025. Trade-related activity and persistent capacity constraints are likely to sustain air cargo’s role as a critical facilitator of global supply chains, even as broader economic uncertainties persist. IATA also points to regional differences in market growth, with the Asia-Pacific region expected to lead expansion, while other markets show more moderate increases.

Despite optimistic forecasts, the outlook report acknowledges several risks that could affect industry performance this year, including continued global supply chain disruptions, delays in aircraft deliveries, and evolving trade or geopolitical tensions that could influence travel patterns. Nevertheless, IATA’s projections reflect an overall positive trajectory for global air transport in 2026, supported by strong passenger demand, improving operational metrics, and sustained cargo activity.
